San Jose, California Rehabs

San Jose Alcohol & Drug Rehabs

San Jose is a city deep in the heart of Silicon Valley. It houses more than a million residents, making it one of the most populous cities in California. Aside from its wealth of established companies and startups, the beautiful (almost) all-year-round sunny weather is what attracts most people to come and live in this city. Beautiful scenery, great job and business opportunities and a climate that is almost perfect – to most people, this would sound as if it would be the perfect place to live in.

However, there is always something more to what meets the eye. In the succeeding years since 2013, crime rate within the city has surged. The city’s average crime rate has ballooned to the point where it has exceeded both California’s and the entire country’s averages. Up to this day, San Jose is no longer considered as one of the safest cities in the country.

One of the illegal activities being closely monitored by the police is the abuse of illegal substances including drugs. Along with the increasing population and ethnic diversity, comes the ever-increasing number of drug-dependent individuals.

Everyone Can Be a Victim

Drugs and drug addiction do not choose someone to victimize. If there is one person addicted to substance abuse, chances are, everyone who are in close proximity to the illegal drug abuser is  most like affected. Below are just two of the most popular crime incidents in San Jose that have garnered attention nationwide.

Timothy Hayes

One of the headlines that shocked Silicon Valley was when one of Google’s executives was found dead in his yacht in Santa Cruz. Timothy Hayes, a guy who was at the peak. He was at the top of the podium. He was winning the rat race; one of the big guns in Silicon Valley, dead due to a lethal overdose of heroin.

Behind the Glitter is an Ugly Stress Reliever

While this news painted a horrific scene for the friends and family of Hayes and to the industry in general, it has exposed the other side of reality behind the picturesque beauty of Silicon Valley. With a unique culture, which revolved around fierce competition and passion that goes beyond exceeding limitations and breaking boundaries, an unlikely source of stress reliever has crept its way into the midst of all the glitz and glamour.

Seen as an alternative way to vent out fumes, an escape, to have fun and a source of energy boost, illegal substances became a natural part of their landscape. According to one addiction coach based in Miami, Cali Estes, “I’ve had them (clients) from Twitter, from Apple, from Google, from Facebook, from Yahoo and its bad out there.” Estes claims that she has helped more than 200 tech workers of whom many of them are high ranked executives who were struggling with different substances ranging from cocaine down to prescription drugs.

Raul Monjardin-Iribe

On the other hand of the spectrum, the same addiction is also prevalent. From top executives down to ordinary citizens, substance abuse has meddled with people’s lives. In one case reported by Jason Green from Bay Area News Group in June 2017, a 36-year-old man was sentenced to 14½ years in prison for possessing cocaine. Raul Monjardin-Iribe pleaded guilty to charges of one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and one count of distribution and possession of cocaine.

What Provoked Him to Do an Illegal Business

Iribe pleaded guilty in the hopes of lowering his sentence. According to him, he came to the US with the hopes of having a better life. He first worked as a kitchen helper which earned him $9 per hour. But as his family’s needs grew, he also had to look for a better source of income. Soon after, he moved to San Jose. He worked as a tree trimmer, but the odds were still stacked against him. An offer which seemed to be too hard to pass came knocking on his doorstep one day. He was offered more than enough money to fill his family’s needs. He took the job. He was then transporting illegal drugs from Southern California to San Jose.

The Outcome of Bad Decision

What seemed like the solution to all of his problems suddenly turned out to be the nadir of his pitfall. Now that Iribe has been locked in prison, his family of four is also left suffering as he is no longer able to provide for them. With no work, his wife and kids live off of what little help his in-laws could spare them. His father-in-law was then 78 and his mother-in-law 58. We could only speculate on how little they could provide for Iribe’s family as they were living in Sinaloa, old and battered.

Hungry for sustenance and opportunity, Iribe and his family have also fallen victim to the wrath of substance abuse. He may or may not be addicted to the substance himself but nonetheless, his life was still ruined by coming into contact with the illegal drug trade. His family, although innocent, has to suffer along with him.

San Jose’s Drug of Choice

According to statistics, marijuana is the most commonly used illegal substance in the city. Studies have shown that there are at least 44,876 individuals who are addicted to marijuana. Prescription drugs which include anti-depressants, sedatives, etc. comes in at second with around 19,652 dependent individuals. Cocaine ranks third most commonly abused substance with at least 7,353 individuals hooked to it. Hallucinogens and inhalants have 3,373 and 1,874 users respectively while heroin comes in at last with only 416 known users. All of these numbers reflect the number of people into drugs that all live in San Jose.

Studies also indicate that at there are around 1,334 people who will die from tobacco, 260 from alcohol and 52 from illegal drug use. At least 51 deaths will be caused by drunk driving or driving under the influence of illegal substance.

It all begins at school, events such as “hackathons”, although are drug-free, encourages students to gorge themselves with energy drinks which contain massive amounts of sugar. The effects of having too much sugar in your body are that it gives you a sudden surge of energy enabling your brain and body to perform better. On the other hand, this sudden surge is then followed by a stiff drop in energy levels making you crave for more. This addictive burst of energy can also be derived from the use of an opioid type of drugs.

What the Local Government is Doing

Despite that, the San Jose Police Department is doing its best to overcome hostilities and minimize the crimes committed each day. One of the steps they took was to make 911 accessible not only through phone but also through the internet. By launching “CrimeReports.com” the San Jose Police Department hopes that more and more people could have access to police assistance and provide them with the necessary aid so that crimes may be urgently solved if not prevented.

Luckily help is never far away. People who suffer from illegal drug abuse or alcoholism may always turn to different institutions to seek help. Self-medicating is never really any help as it always is doomed to fail. Most people who tend to self-medicate most often loose fall back into their old habits as soon as they experience pressure or stress. What is making this situation even worse is that the society is encouraging people to self-medicate.

Drug Rehab Treatment in San Jose, CA

In response to the increasing drug addiction rate in the city, the government has allowed drug rehabilitation and recovery centers to provide their services for the people of San Jose. There are around 20 drug institutions within the city. These institutions are scattered between North, East, West and South San Jose.

Treatment may vary between recovery centers but they all take the same steps in order to make sure that proper help is given to each individual. Every person has their own story and it also goes that their situation is unique to them. Therefore the treatment process, although is systematic, is also tailored to each individual’s needs. This is why it is important to undergo a routine procedure to ensure that proper care and medication is given appropriately.

The Treatment Process in San Jose

The goal of every program eventually stops the addiction and to keep the person drug-free in the long run. To successfully achieve that goal, different programs are being conducted including the following:

Assessment

In any treatment, an assessment is always necessary. During this stage, important questions are answered. Questions that include the patient’s personal background. This includes establishing whether addiction is present or not, what is the substance he/she is addicted to, how did the addiction come about and what is the safest route and medication to take in order to get the person out of the bad habit.

How Assessments Are Done

Assessments are conducted regularly to make sure that the patient is on the right track and that the procedure is producing the desired effect. They are always conducted in a private setting wherein complete anonymity of the patient is carefully observed. All personal information regarding the patient is strictly kept confidential and they are assured that it will only be used for the purpose of the treatment.

The Different Types of Assessment

There are different assessment techniques which are employed by both the patient and the therapist or coach. These include:

  • Professional assessment. Professional assessment is as straightforward as it is. The therapist or coach will be asking you questions first through questionnaires and then through a conversation.
  • Self-assessment. Self-assessment can also be undergone by the patient.
  • Medical self-assessments. Medical self-assessments help a patient become more aware one’s current condition. This process enables the patient to become fully aware of one’s condition and whether he or she should seek further help.

Medical assessments are done through a series of medical tests which is aimed at establishing whether a person has an addiction to certain substances or not. Most of the time, the substances that taken in by drug and alcohol users are not properly processed by the body, that is why traces can of the substance can easily be acquired through medical tests. Medical assessments can provide a lot of information which can be beneficial in assuring the treatment’s success.

Pre-intake

Prior to medication a treatment plan is composed. During this process, behavioral and environmental changes may be recommended by the therapist. In order for a successful treatment, not is it only necessary for the patient to take medications but to also to change certain things about his/her lifestyle. This minute changes in their lifestyle will have a huge impact on their treatment as a whole. Certain events may have triggered a person’s addiction and in order for the addiction to be stopped, those events, places or people that trigger the addiction should be avoided.

Intake

Medications will be given not only to detoxify the body but also to bring it back into a balanced state; wherein the body would reach the point where it no longer demands for the substance. Medications are carefully given so that the desired effect can be achieved. As the patient’s needs change so does the medication. Medicines are used to counteract withdrawal symptoms, avert relapse and remedy co-occurring conditions. Without proper medication, it would be hard for the patient to push through with the treatment process. Medication makes the treatment process a lot easier and ensures a higher success rate for the patient.

Detox

A very important part of the treatment process is the detox process. Although it is not the treatment in itself, it helps the patients get over the drug addiction both physically and mentally. During the detoxification procedure, the body will be cleansed of the residues that were left by the harmful intoxicants. This residue often triggers harmful side effects both physically, mentally and emotionally. A proper detox should always be followed by further treatment as detoxification only solves the physical aspect of the problem and not the emotional/mental and social aspect of it.

What is withdrawal? How long does it last?

Inpatient Treatment

For severe cases inpatient treatment is advised. However, people who think that they would do better as an inpatient could opt for this treatment as well. Inpatients are treated to a wide variety of benefits which can be very helpful in their effort to achieve a full recovery. Inpatient programs and facilities enable patients to rebuild their foundations so that they could re-incorporate themselves to the society seamlessly.

Inpatient programs such as therapeutic communities encourage and provide a positive atmosphere for the patient so that he/she would be motivated to move forward and continue with the entire life-changing process. It provides them with treatment staff that not only helps them with their needs but also acts as a key agent for change. They provide a positive influence for the patient so that they could change their attitude, the outlook in life and behavioral responses. Counseling and psychological help are also readily available for inpatients.

Outpatient Treatment

The city of San Jose provides a lot of recovery facilities that offer outpatient treatment. Outpatient treatments are meant for those people who are still able to function well in society yet struggle with certain addictions. More often than not people with high ranking positions in society opt for outpatient treatments as they have to maintain their productivity while at the same time continue with the treatment. Outpatient treatment can be as effective as an inpatient treatment provided that the patient follows the guidelines. Outpatient programs may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, multi-dimensional family therapy, motivational interviews and motivational incentives.

Aftercare

Substance abuse rehabilitation is a lifelong obligation thus an aftercare plan is always put into action so that a patient does not revert back to his/her old habits. Once a patient completes a treatment procedure, readjusting and coping with the stresses of society may push them back to their usual routine. An aftercare plan ensures that this does not happen. Aftercare plans are carefully created by your therapist/coach to suit your personal needs. It provides you with alternative solutions so that you will not have to fall back to your previous pothole. It is a backup plan, a support, which will ensure that you stay out of your addiction for good.
